If your child has grown a shoe size over the school holidays or if you find that their shoes are well worn, it may be a good idea to add new school shoes to your shopping list. Ensuring your child has properly fitting shoes is crucial for their comfort, health, and overall success during the school year
Evidence shows that ill-fitting shoes can lead to a host of problems, including:
Dermatological problems (ie. blistering, calluses and ingrown nails):
Shoes that are too tight can cause blisters, calluses formation, and ingrown nails which may impact a child’s ability to perform for long distances and increase the risk of infection and recurrence. On the other hand, shoes that are too loose may also cause blistering.
Toe deformities
Improperly fitting shoes that are too small in the toe-box can lead to more serious issues over time, such as bunions and hammertoe defomities and other abnormal foot shapes, due to excessive compression.
Posture and Balance Problems
Shoes that are too large can impact a child’s posture and balance whilst walking, which can, in turn, affect their gait and physical development. This can also increase the risk of falls and injuries including ankle sprains.
Research has shown that footwear that is too small can restrict the hindfoot, midfoot and big toe range of motion in 8-12 year old children. From sports to simple playground games, the wrong shoes can hinder a child’s ability to perform, impacting their confidence and enjoyment.
By prioritising fit, comfort, and support, you’re helping your child put their best foot forward—literally and figuratively—as they step into a new school year. Properly fitting shoes not only keep their feet healthy but also ensure they can participate in all activities comfortably and confidently.
