Morton's Neuroma Case History

Patient History

A 67-year-old gentleman presented with:

  • 40-year history of pain in the ball of his left foot

  • Burning pain and tingling sensation

  • Swelling in the affected area

  • Pain with every step

  • Sensitivity to even bed sheet contact

  • Restricted mobility affecting quality of life

  • Work capacity concerns

  • Previous failed treatments including two cortisone injections

Clinical Assessment

  • Area of pain: left forefoot between 3rd and 4th metatarsals (3rd interspace)

  • Common site for nerve entrapment

  • Ultrasound investigation confirmed moderately large neuroma/bursal complex

Diagnosis

Left 3rd interspace neurofibrosis (Morton's Neuroma)

Treatment

After reviewing conservative and surgical options, surgery was chosen due to:

  • Long history of pain

  • Failed conservative treatments

The surgical procedure involved:

  • Day procedure

  • Approximately one hour duration

  • Removal of neuroma from interspace

  • Post-operative shoe worn for about 4 weeks

  • Regular follow-up visits for redressing and care instructions

Outcome

At 8 months post-surgery:

  • Patient reports surgery "changed my life immensely"

  • Complete pain relief

  • Returned to normal daily activities without discomfort
