Surgical Correction Following Foot Trauma: A Case Study

Patient Background

  • 63-year-old male

  • History of motorcycle accident

  • Significant trauma to right foot and leg

  • Presenting issues:

    • Downward-hanging 2nd toe causing trips

    • Upward-pointing 1st toe

    • Difficulty with footwear

    • Deformed 1st toenail

Clinical Assessment

  • Evidence of extensive prior trauma

  • Right 1st toe hyperextension

  • Right 2nd toe claw deformity

  • Suspected tendon damage

  • Footwear fitting challenges

Diagnosis

  • Post-traumatic tendon damage resulting in:

    • Toe misalignment

    • Functional impairment

    • Mobility issues

    • Footwear complications

Surgical Intervention

  • Corrective surgery performed on both toes:

    • 1st toe osteotomy with k-wire fixation

    • 2nd toe fusion

    • Stabilisation against 3rd toe

Treatment Outcome

  • Successful recovery at 8-month follow-up

  • Patient reported high satisfaction

  • Improved footwear fitting

  • Resumed daily hour-long walks

  • Return to normal footwear use
