Low Level Laser Therapy: Treatment Benefits

Jan 22, 2018

What Is Low Level Laser Therapy?

A laser is a device that emits light. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or 'cold' laser uses low intensity, coherent light in specific wavelengths to penetrate into tissue without hurting or heating the skin or body tissue.

How Does LLLT Work?

LLLT has three main effects on body tissues:

Reducing Inflammation

LLLT increases production of nitric oxide, which:

  • Increases blood vessel width

  • Brings oxygen and other molecules to injured tissue

  • Promotes cell healing

  • Reduces inflammation

Pain Relief

This treatment:

  • Stimulates production of endogenous opioids and serotonin

  • Has an inhibitory effect on pain receptors

  • Provides pain relief equal to or better than NSAIDs

Stimulation

LLLT stimulates production of ATP, which:

  • Provides cellular energy

  • Reduces cellular oxidative stress

What Conditions Benefit From LLLT?

  • Tendinopathy/tendinitis

  • Soft tissue injuries such as sprains or strains

  • Joint conditions

  • Arthritis

  • Post-surgical healing

  • Wound healing

  • Neuropathic (nerve) pain

Treatment Restrictions

LLLT cannot be used on:

  • Eyes

  • Thyroid gland

  • Pregnant uterus

  • Cancerous areas (except with physician permission for pain relief)

  • Over tattoos

  • In use since the 1960s with over 3,000 published trials

  • No published evidence of harm
